Former UGA Football Player Arrested
According to police, the suspect, identified as Brandon Wheeless, entered the store on Monday and demanded money from the clerk. When the clerk refused, Wheeless allegedly shot him in the head. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Former University of Georgia football player Emanuel King was arrested Thursday on two counts of murder and one count of armed robbery for the death of 23-year-old Jenna Sills, a clerk at the Oconee County convenience store where she was killed. The arrest comes nearly two months after an early morning incident at RaceTrac in which Sills was shot and killed. Her body was found by a customer who showed up for work at about 4:30 a.m.

A news release from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said King was developed as the suspect early in their investigation, which involved reviewing surveillance video from multiple businesses along Lexington Road. University of Georgia football player Simeon Thomas was arrested in Lee County late Tuesday night and charged with murder, robbery, and other charges in connection with a RaceTrac clerk’s death. The UGA former football player arrested in the death of a RaceTrac clerk early Sunday morning is named Jaborian Tip McKenzie. According to the Athens-Clarke County jail website, McKenzie was arrested at 2:45 a.m. Sunday, charged with murder, and is being held without bond.

The victim was identified as 59-year-old Richard Thomas Coggins, according to Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis and several sources familiar with the victim and the case who spoke on condition of anonymity. He said the cause of death was strangulation and that Coggins died Saturday at his home on Old Well Road near Lake Oconee. The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Lamont Moss on Friday in the shooting death of 23-year-old TaQuan Phillips at the RaceTrac gas station unincorporated community of Watkinsville. Moss currently is a safety at the University of Georgia and a former standout player at Clarke Central High School, where he was an All-State player for head coach Mack Durham.
